The Truth About Starting a GLP-1 Journey (That No One Really Talks About)

glp-1 health May 01, 2025

When I first started my GLP-1 journey (for me, that meant Zepbound), I thought I knew what to expect. I did the scrolling, the reading, the over-researching—because obviously that’s how we prepare for everything these days. I saw the before-and-after photos, read the hype, and figured I was ready.

What no one really warned me about was the middle part.
You know—where your appetite disappears at weird times, your favorite snack suddenly tastes like regret, and you’re wondering why your pants are falling off but your brain still thinks you're the same size.

The truth? GLP-1 is more than just weight loss. It’s a full-on lifestyle shift. So if you’re just getting started—or if you're a few weeks in and silently wondering, “Is this normal?”—I’ve got you. Here's what I wish someone had told me upfront, no fluff, no scare tactics, and definitely no judgment.

Weight Loss Isn’t the Only Win

Look, the number on the scale may drop—but don’t let that be the only thing you're focused on. Some of my biggest wins weren’t even about weight. Things like walking up stairs without huffing, feeling more comfortable in my skin, or fitting into that jacket I forgot I owned?
Chef’s kiss.

And let’s not forget confidence. It doesn’t show up all at once, but it sneaks in—like when you catch your reflection and smile instead of sigh.

Your Relationship With Food Will Shift (And That’s Not a Bad Thing)

This one surprised me. You might not feel as hungry, and when you do eat, it’s way less than before. I didn’t expect food to feel… neutral? But honestly, it was kind of refreshing.

What I didn’t expect was realizing how often I used food as a reward, distraction, or comfort. And suddenly, when that connection started fading, I had to figure out new ways to cope with stress or boredom. It's not always easy—but it's definitely eye-opening.

Also: you’ll probably start side-eyeing portions at restaurants like, “How did I ever eat all that?”

Yes, Side Effects Exist—but Most Are Manageable

Okay, real talk: yes, some side effects might pop up—like nausea or feeling extra full faster than usual. But for most people, they’re super manageable with a little trial and error.
My MVPs? Hydration, fiber, a good probiotic, and light movement. (Pro tip: keep electrolytes handy. Lifesaver.)

The trick is to be patient with your body—it’s adjusting, and it’s okay to ease into things.

The Scale Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

There will be weeks where the scale doesn’t move—and you’ll swear it’s broken. But your progress? Still happening. Think better sleep, looser clothes, clearer skin, more energy, and a whole lot of “Wait, when did this start feeling easier?”

Non-scale victories are the real gems. Celebrate the heck out of them.

The Mental Side Matters More Than You’d Expect

Losing weight doesn’t magically fix how you feel about yourself. (I know, rude.)
You might still struggle with old habits, negative self-talk, or that voice that nitpicks in the mirror. That’s normal. Changing your body takes effort—but changing your mindset? That’s a whole other level.

This is where things like journaling, talking to friends, or setting small goals really help. You don’t have to figure it all out today. Just be kind to yourself as you go.

Not Everyone Will Get It—And That’s Fine

Some people might be weird about your progress. You’ll get comments like, “Oh, you’re doing that shot thing?” or “Must be nice to lose weight without trying.” (Cue the eye roll.)

Here’s the thing: you don’t owe anyone an explanation. This journey is personal, and not everyone has to understand it for it to be valid. Let your results speak for themselves.

You’ll Still Need to Show Up for Yourself

GLP-1 helps a lot—but it’s not a magic button. You still have to make choices. You’ll still need to hydrate, move your body, listen to hunger cues (or lack of them), and learn what works for you.

But the cool part? It starts to feel doable. Like, actually doable.

You Might Feel a Little “Off” About Changing—and That’s Okay Too

As your body changes, you might feel like you're meeting a new version of yourself. It’s exciting… and weird. Sometimes I’d look in the mirror and feel like, “Wait, who is this?” It can take a minute for your brain to catch up to your body.

Don’t feel bad if it’s not all sunshine and photo shoots. Give yourself permission to adjust.

Support Makes a Big Difference

You don’t have to go through this alone. Whether it's a friend, a Facebook group, or your dog (honestly, pets are elite listeners)—having someone to share your highs and lows with can make a huge difference.

And if you can’t find that space? Create it. There are a lot of us out here trying to figure this out, one weird craving and pair of stretchy pants at a time.

This journey isn’t just about weight. It’s about feeling better in your body. Reclaiming your energy. Trusting yourself again. And learning that you’re capable of way more than you thought.

So if no one else has told you lately: You’re doing an amazing job. And the best part? You’re just getting started.
